AUSTIN, TEXAS
After a one and a half hour drive to Austin on IH 35, we will visit the
Texas State Capitol. As we get closer to the bridge over Town Lake we
get an amazing head-on view of downtown in which the six lanes of
Congress Avenue dead-end into a massive building made of pink granite -
- the Texas State Capitol building. The fact that it is perched atop a hill
makes the hulking structure appear even more imposing.
There are many options available for tours in Austin. Please select two
additional venues from the following selections. Admission fees, if
applicable, and lunch are included in the price of this tour.
1. The LBJ Library, located on the campus of the University of Texas
includes a replica of the President's oval office. The Library houses forty
million pages of historical documents which include the papers from the
entire public career of Lyndon Baines Johnson and those of close
associates.
2. The French Legation was restored by the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas in the 1950's. The mansion of the Legation is built in the Anglo-
French style. The unusual paired columns are a feature of French
neoclassical architecture, seen in buildings like the Louvre in Paris as well
as in the great houses of Louisiana.
3. The Elizabet Ney Museum housed Elisabet's studio and later became
one of Texas' first museums. She is considered the greatest 19th Century
German woman sculptor and sculpted the great men of frontier Texas.
Among them are life-sized figures of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston
that stand today in the national and state capitols.
4. The Umlauf Sculpture Gardens houses over 130 sculptures by Charles
Umlauf, a prolific and internationally known sculptor. Umlauf's
sculptures range from detailed realism to lyrical abstractions. His
materials are equally diverse, from the exotic woods and terra cotta or cast
stone of his earlier pieces, to the rich bronzes and alabasters or luminous
marbles of his prime.
5. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, founded in 1982, is the
only national non-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation
and re-establishment of North American native plants in planned
landscapes. The gardens and natural areas of the Center are filled with
more than 400 species of grasses, shrubs, trees, and wildflowers native to
Central Texas. Extensive plantings of native species, the rooftop water
harvesting system, passive solar heating, breezeways, and the use of
recycled materials help protect the Central Texas Hill County ecosystem.
