LITERARY WORLD OF AUSTIN
The Harry Ransom Center owns some thirty-six million manuscripts, one million rare books, five million photographic images and numbers works of art. On display in the gallery are the Gutenburg Bible, printed in 1455 and one of only five such books in the U.S.; James Michener's collection of twentieth-century American art and numerous other literary treasures.
Our next stop will be The LBJ Library. Located on the campus of the University of Texas, it includes a replica of the President's oval office. The Library houses forty million pages of historical documents which include the papers from the entire public career of Lyndon Baines Johnson and those of close associates.
We continue to the Bremond Block, a rare collection of homes in Austin's Central Business District. What has survived in the midst of downtown is a rare collection of homes - most notably an entire block of houses belonging to members of a single family.
Our last stop will be the O. Henry Home & Museum, an 1892 Victorian cottage. Writer William Sydney Porter gained fame using the pen name of O. Henry while in prison for embezzlement.
