WILDFLOWERS AND GARDENS
The Umlauf Sculpture Gardens houses over 130 sculptures by Charles Umlauf, a prolific and internationally known sculptor. Umlauf's sculptures range from detailed realism to lyrical abstractions. His materials are equally diverse, from the exotic woods and terra cotta or cast stone of his earlier pieces, to the rich bronzes and alabasters or luminous marbles of his prime. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, founded in 1982, is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation and re-establishment of North American native plants in planned landscapes. The gardens and natural areas of the Center are filled with more than 400 species of grasses, shrubs, trees, and wildflowers native to Central Texas. Extensive plantings of native species, the rooftop water harvesting system, passive solar heating, breezeways, and the use of recycled materials help protect the Central Texas Hill County ecosystem.
We will drive through Austin's largest and most popular park, Zilker Park, home of Barton Springs Pool, a 68 degree spring-fed pool in this 351-acre park.
